NEWS FROM THE 'BUILD WITH US TEAM

DON'T MISS OUR MUSICAL CHAIRS JAZZ CAFÉ!!
The famous Jazz musician, Justin Binek is in Holland for two days for a European tour (see site www.justinbinek.com). On Wednesday 4th August he will give a Jazz Café evening at our church starting at 19.30. The revenue goes to new chairs for the parish hall. Entry is €10,-- per person and if you'd like to buy an old chair you can take it home for another €10,--. The music will be co-presented by Kyle Biebel and Michiel Kleykamp.

CAR BOOT SALE : Sunday, 22nd August 2010
This will be held after Mass on that Sunday and, apart from using the car park, the lawn alongside the church can also be used for those who wish to participate by selling their wares without doing so from a car. If the weather is bad then everything could be moved into the church itself. The purpose of the sale is twofold: it is an opportunity for you to get rid of all your unwanted but still useful ‘stuff’ and then contribute part of your takings to the Build With Us fund at the end of the sale. This has to be a ‘win-win’ situation so please be as generous as possible! If you wish to participate please register at the Build With Us table.
  • Those wishing to sell from their car should bear in mind that the car park capacity is limited, so first-come first-served. A table to display items would be useful.
  • Those wishing to sell from the lawn will need a rug, mat or blanket and display table.
All participants will be responsible for:

•    bringing their sales goods to the church on the day of the sale itself (not before) and for removing unsold items at the end of the sale;
•    providing sufficient small change, bags and boxes, and possibly newspaper to wrap sold articles.

Do you have any questions? Please contact the Build With Us table.

THE BUILD WITH US INFORMATION TABLE
After Mass every weekend we have a special table for the Build With Us Team where you can buy tickets for events and get information about the campaign and some idea of the progress being made with the building plans.

We are now entering the final phase of the planning of the renovations and expect building to start in the next month or two.

A PRESENTATION ON THE PLANS WAS MADE IN CHURCH IN JUNE 2009 AND YOU CAN VIEW THE PRESENTATION HERE.
This is a revised version (Feb 2010) of the original presentation since most of the transition work has been completed in the mean time, as well as a number of related projects

THE 'BUILD WITH US' CAMPAIGN

The 'Build With Us' campaign, started in 2004, has been a very successful initiative to raise funds to enable structural changes to be made to the church buildings.

OUR MISSION

The mission of the 'Build With Us' campaign is to plan and organise events in support of fund raising, and in doing so, to create an atmosphere that builds and strengthens the community bond in soldiarity around the building project.

WHAT DOES 'BUILD WITH US' HOPE TO ACHIEVE?

  • The first phase of the building work involved internal alterations to the church itself and, with the help of 'Build With Us', was completed in 2 years.

  • The second phase of the building plan, is to create a suitable Pastoral Centre by renovating and altering the other buildings connected to the church. The area is planned to accommodate a day chapel, a suitable space for community gatherings, meeting rooms for Relgious Education programmes (we need to cater for about 200 children each Sunday), and facilities for the Parish Office and staff rooms in the future.
We hope to realise the funding of this initiative within a period of 10 years.

Please see the pictures of the renovation of the sancturay HERE .

WHY CONTRIBUTE TO A CHURCH THAT IS NOT OUR OWN?

The international character of our church means that most of our parishioners are with us for only a few years. Creating a sense of 'ownership' of a church in a foreign country is therefore difficult, as many parishioners will not see the result of their investments in the long term. However, please consider the fact that this parish has been around for over 55 years and has grown into one of the largest in the Diocese.

What we enjoy now is the result of what people have invested in our community over several generations, and we are committed to ensuring that future generations are able to worship and practise their faith in English.

Now that (after all this time!!) our community has finally found a permanent home we hope that one day you may return with your children and/or grandchildren to show them where you found a spiritual home during your time in The Hague. What we build today we hand on to the future, and it is an investment in the Universal Church.

Through 70 nationalities working together we may experience this much more than in our original home parishes.

Any direct contribution to 'Build With Us' goes into a separate bank account (see below) and donations to this account will only be used for this purpose.

RECENT PAST EVENTS

AUCTION OF PROMISES BRINGS IN €2780 FOR THE BUILDING FUND JUNE 13th
Last Sunday’s good weather made it possible to hold the auction outdoors, which added to the enjoyment of the afternoon. Its success was due to the generosity of those who pledged their services and talents, those who made donations in cash and kind, the enthusiasm of the bidders, and the superb and persuasive auctioneering skills of Arthur Faulkner. To all of you, and to the hardworking team who organized an excellent BBQ, the Build With Us group says a very grateful and appreciative “Thank You”.

PARISH DINNER DANCE ON 13TH MAY
A sum of €1099.- was deposited in the Parish House after a most enjoyable evening, and the Build With Us team wish to thank everyone who attended, the donors of raffle prizes (The Steal Club, Thais Restaurant Phuket, Café de Bok, Thomas Green’s, Kelly’s Expat Shopping, Ria Dorrestijn Kleur & Stijl Salon, Mercedes Connelly), Livia Lobo, Maggie Nijman, DJ Shahin of ASE Events, and the staff of Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar (Bijhorst).

CRAFT GROUP SALE
Our grateful thanks to the ladies of the Craft Group who generously donated €273.- to the Building Fund following their recent sale in the Church.

JAZZ CONCERT RAISES €366 FOR THE BUILDING FUND
Those who attended the concert on Friday, 23 April, were treated to an evening of wonderful jazz. To the Bicaderanba Jazz Band (Filippo Bianchini on Tenor Sax, Michele Cascianelli on guitar, Francesco Derubeis on drums, Francesco Anguiuli on Double Bass and Nadia Basurto with her great ‘scat singing’) we say a very grateful ‘thank you’.

A CELEBRATION OF CHRISTIAN MUSIC FROM AROUND THE WORLD
On Friday 11th December our Parish was treated to a wonderful family evening with music and songs from all over the world for all ages. It really helped to put us all in the Christmas spirit. Our children ‘stole’ the show with their ‘Rocking Christmas Tree’. Together with our singers, musicians, technicians, hospitality, craft group, printers and cleaners, they gave the audience a very warm winter’s night. A special word of ‘Thanks’ to Vivian Khouw, Mikae Natsuyama and Graham Bobby for helping the singers with their preparation, as well as all those who helped behind the scenes. Through the kind donations of the audience the evening raised €1400 for our Build With Us campaign.

INDIAN EVENING DINNER
A GREAT SUCCESS-MOST ENJOYABLE-CULINARY DELIGHT-COMMUNITY INSPIRING!
The Bulletin entry proclaimed, "Our Indian cools have gained such a reputation through their earlier events...". Well, the dinner on Friday evening 16th October simply heightened this accolade. What an outstanding menu- food characterised by a sophisticated and subtle use of various spices, herbs and vegetables. Prepared and presented by our popular chefs: Livia Lobo, Doris Salmon, Clotilda Zacharias and Beryl Pavey. It was an evening of delightful parish community spirit, with banter, laughter, good cheer, a full house and 'a taste of India'. Our grateful thanks to all who came and especially to those who gave their time (Maureen Cass and Gladys Hendriksz did a beautiful job of decorating the room and dressing the tables) and worked so hard to make the evening the outstanding success that it was. Despite the fact that the Parish House could only accommodate 38 people, the evening raised €1140.- for the Building Campaign, as well as a little over €100.- for Meals for the Homeless. A THANK YOU FROM THE ‘CASH IN THE ATTIC’ GARAGE SALE TEAM
DEAR PARISH! Thank you for your generosity and support of our GARAGE SALE last weekend. Thanks to you we were able to pass on the amount of +/- €2,500 to our ‘BUILD WITH US’ fund. We never expected to have so much fun in this fund-raising event. It does, however, sometimes take an army to make these things happen. And thank the army we shall...THANK YOU to Josephine, James, Peter, Derick, Thomas, Harry, Norah, Nathalie, Miguel (and his Mum), Cathal, Theo, Mike, Hans, Kate & Eloise.
See you at the White Elephant (Bazaar) Booth at Food Fair!! With heartfelt thanks...Nigel and Janete.

....AND A THANK YOU TO THE TEAM
Many thanks to the team who worked so hard to set up our Garage Sale last weekend. They spent many hours sorting out, pricing and moving all the stuff we had to sell. It was great to see that, especially the religious items, went to a new future and the money raised will be a great help to our ‘Build With Us’ fund!!

BUILD WITH US BAKE SALE
Thank you to the Bakers. Thank you to the Buyers. In fact, Thank you to ALL who in any way participated in making last Sunday's Bake Sale such a success. We were able to add EUR 532 to the Build With Us coffers. You really made 'every cupcake count'.

THE AFRICAN EVENING RAISES €1383.- FOR THE BUILDING FUND
It was, once again, a colourful and entertaining evening of great food and enjoyable music that got quite a few on the dance-floor strutting their stuff! To Theo and Adanna Madu who organised the event, and to their wonderful team of helpers (Patricia Akinyemi, Edith Ahajumobi, Joannes Nwosu, Grace Maduekwe, Ernesta Sinsai and Kate James), go our grateful thanks for their generosity and hard work.

ANOTHER WONDERFUL S. E. ASIAN EVENING NETS €1,253.-
Candy Pritchard once again produced a fantastic spread of dishes to the delight of everyone present in the Parish Hall on Friday, March 27. To her go our grateful thanks, and to Gladys Hendriksz and Maureen Cass for the room and table decorations, as well as Clotilda Zacharias for her delicious samosas. A special word of thanks also to Ambassador Arguelles of the Philippines, who not only graced the evening with his presence but also contributed a wonderful Philippine dish, and to everyone who supported the event.

THANKS FOR THE PANCAKE SALE
Last Sunday’s pancake sale (22 Feb 2009) was a sell-out and added €175.- to the building campaign. Despite some minor hitches in the kitchen, the event was a great success thanks to the generosity and much needed help provided by Pam van Driel, Elly Derksen, Valerie van Steenis, Norah Moneypenny, Ifeayin Taylor and Derick Allaway. The idea to hold the sale came from Andy van Steenis who unfortunately could not attend, but then someone has to keep NS on track! To him and to everyone who supported us – “Thank You”.

A THANK YOU FROM THE 'BUILD WITH US' TEAM
The 'Build With Us' team wishes to thank everyone who helped make this such an enjoyable and successful evening: all those who attended, the donors of raffle prizes, Maggie Nijman and the Salon Orchestra Serenade, Bill Stevenson our MC, DJ Sahin of ASE Events and the staff of Hotel Den Haag-Wassenaar (Bijhorst). Our grateful thanks to you all.

WONDERFUL TURNOUT FOR OUR ANNUAL PARISH DINNER DANCE
Thanks to the tireless efforts of our 'Build With Us' team and all the others who helped support the Annual Parish Dinner Dance, 180 people had a great evening. After costs the Dance raised €2,300 for the 'Build With Us' campaign. A wonderful initiative and result.
Thanks. Fr Sjaak
