JUSTICE AND PEACE MEDITATION
It would be easy to blame Albert Lasker for my accumulation of stuff. Lasker was the advertising genius who designed the 1930's-era radio commercials for Lucky Strike cigarettes, Palmolive soap and Pepsodent toothpaste and helped set us on the path towards our becoming a consumption society. At the same time, we often try to excuse our consumerism by claiming that we're accumulating all this for our children and grandchildren. This problem of accumulation and inheritance was the issue from which sprang Jesus parable about the rich farmer. The parable revolves around the farmer's plans to protect his surplus stuff ("I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones"), and God's questioning response about who really can claim owenership of our stuff ("All the things you have prepared, to whom will they belong?"). Jesus' listeners already knew the answer to this question; God has made us stewards of his stuff, and we are to hold this in trust for the common good (Lev 25:23, Dt 8:17, 1 Chron 29:16).
Help me, Lord, to be a good steward of your bounty. Help me realize that my children probably don't want or need much of my surplus stuff, and help me to discover a better way for this to serve the common good.

DON'T MISS OUR MUSICAL CHAIRS JAZZ CAFÉ!!
The famous Jazz musician, Justin Binek is in Holland for two days for a European tour (see site www.justinbinek.com). On Wednesday 4th August he will give a Jazz Café evening at our church starting at 19.30. The revenue goes to new chairs for the parish hall. Entry is €10,-- per person and if you'd like to buy an old chair you can take it home for another €10,--. The music will be co-presented by Kyle Biebel and Michiel Kleykamp.

CAR BOOT SALE : Sunday, 22nd August 2010
This will be held after Mass on that Sunday and, apart from using the car park, the lawn alongside the church can also be used for those who wish to participate by selling their wares without doing so from a car. If the weather is bad then everything could be moved into the church itself. The purpose of the sale is twofold: it is an opportunity for you to get rid of all your unwanted but still useful ‘stuff’ and then contribute part of your takings to the Build With Us fund at the end of the sale. This has to be a ‘win-win’ situation so please be as generous as possible! If you wish to participate please register at the Build With Us table.
  • Those wishing to sell from their car should bear in mind that the car park capacity is limited, so first-come first-served. A table to display items would be useful.
  • Those wishing to sell from the lawn will need a rug, mat or blanket and display table.
All participants will be responsible for:

•    bringing their sales goods to the church on the day of the sale itself (not before) and for removing unsold items at the end of the sale;
•    providing sufficient small change, bags and boxes, and possibly newspaper to wrap sold articles.

Do you have any questions? Please contact the Build With Us table.

CLEARING OUT
A "BIG THANKS" to all those who assisted last Saturday in clearing out the church's adjacent building/cellars so that the construction can continue at full speed after the vacation period without any delays. The turn out was fantastic and included Fr. Sjaak, Derick, Arthur, Josephine, Roderic, Andy, Gary, Frank, Peter, Priya, Uskram, Mark, Herdian, Lucas, Peter and Hans.
A few days later, Arthur, Andy, Mark and Hans got together and (over)loaded a 10³ meter trash container with everything. Thanks to everyone for helping with these big jobs!
CHAIRS FOR SALE
Please help to get rid of our old chairs! For €10 you can take one. The money will be invested in new ones. Also, if anyone is good at upholstering, the chairs from the Green Room badly need it, so please contact the Parish Office.
PRE-REGISTRATION FOR R.E. AND NEW R.E. COORDINATION TEAM
It would be a great help if parents, who would like their children in R.E. next pastoral year (starting in September), could pre-register before the Summer holidays. That reduces the amount of administration drastically at the beginning of the new year. The forms can be collected at the Welcome Table at the back of the church.
CYCLING TO JERUSALEM FOR OUR DAY CHAPEL …..
Emmanuelle started off on her journey to Jerusalem on Sunday 13th June. Below is an update on her travels/adventures. The difficult moments are actually getting going in the morning, packing the saddle bags and making sure not to leave anything behind. She has stayed in many different places and met many kind people. At the moment she is cycling though Italy. She says that the Italians are lovely but are confused about distance as they say that a place is only 15kms away when her subsequent experience is more like 150kms!! In the Italian tunnels which are unlit, with very uneven surfaces. She was really frightened by having to cycle in the middle of the motorway, balancing herself so that her bike would not fall into one of the many holes. Luckily two Dutch boys were also cycling her way and they teamed up as a threesome. Her friends say she sounds very happy and fulfilled and loves to be on her bike. At the moment the sponsorship amount is €4005. Emmanuelle hopes to raise €25000 for our new Day Chapel so there's a bit more to go!! If you would like an update on her progress then get in touch with Madeleine (e-mail), Carien Pot (e-mail) or Carol Wooley (e-mail)

FAMILY OUTING BUS TRIP ON 15TH AUGUST
Hop on to the Parish Bus for a fun afternoon for a good cause!!

Event: In Fr. Sjaak's hometown Wervershoof, once every five years, there is a short liturgy in the tent of the dodgem cars at the annual Village Fair. This is to help a charity based on the UN Millennium Goals. This year we will melt a block of ice of one cubic metre and everyone can guess, by buying a lottery ticket for €5, how long it will take to melt. The winner will receive a prize of €500. The money raised by this initiative will be used for clean drinking water in Cape Town, South Africa.

What to see? A beautiful village on the coast of the Ijsselmeer. The Village Fair with rides and activities for the whole family and, of course, the 'Dom of West Friesland', where Fr. Sjaak was ordained. See Holland as it really is!

Time and Price: The bus will leave on Sunday 15th August after Mass at 11.20 from the church and will return at 20.00. The price for the trip is €15 for children and €17.50 for adults. (You will also need to bring a packed lunch for the trip.) The price includes entry to the street reception where beer and soft drinks will be sold for only €1.

Sign up lists are at the Welcome Table. Payment must be made when signing up and is non-refundable. To find out more about the day please visit the website: www.auxilia-brasili-ja.nl

EVALUATION OF SATURDAY EVENING MASS TIME
After more than three years celebrating the Saturday evening Mass at 19.30, several arguments have arisen for an evaluation of the Mass time. We cannot start earlier due to the commitment we signed in the contract honouring the Dutch Mass and the time they need for coffee and clearing up. For the reasons mentioned below I’d like to think about changing the Saturday evening Mass to Sunday at 17.30.
  • In the whole of The Hague there is no Sunday evening Mass - it would be a new service to the City
  • Possibility for people who are away for the weekend to still come to the liturgy
  • Social life of Saturday evening no longer compromised. We’d be free!
  • Baptism parents find the Saturday’s really late. So do a number of Saturday night Mass participants, especially in the winter.
  • Social events like parties, dinners and receptions can be easier organised after the Sunday 17.30 Mass than the Saturday
  • Saturday night would become available for earlier parish social events like BWU dinners.
  • Youth participation would be easier on Sundays
  • The Dutch parish would have more freedom. Especially now that the parish hall will be closed. They have no place for coffee. It is difficult to have their coffee in the church whilst our choir is rehearsing and getting ready for our Mass on Saturdays.
  • The Dutch and our parish would no longer cross each other in the sacristy...
  • More time for the Saturday Choir to get together before and/or after Mass on Sundays
  • In winter, the time is much better and lower heating costs would be incurred
  • Possibility of renting out our church on Saturday evening to the French or Bulgarian parish. Both are looking for a worship space
  • Of course the main family liturgy remains on Sunday morning with RE, Children’s liturgy etc. Sunday evening is a more quiet and young adult event
  • Special Feast Days like Easter Vigil etc. stay on Saturday night of course
On Saturday 28th August and Saturday 4th September the congregation will be asked to vote on the proposal and thereafter a decision will be made. If the proposal gets a majority vote it will take effect on the weekend of 2nd/3rd October before the start of winter. Please think about this. Thank you.

NEW UN/EC PRAYER GROUP
On every first Tuesday of the month, beginning in September, we'll get together for a short lunchtime prayer meeting at the 'Mater Ecclesia' Villa on Eisenhowerlaan 120. It's practically next door to the ICTY, Europol and OPCW. Formerly we met at the ICTY but, since other institutions expressed an interest, everyone is most welcome at the new venue.
