Fr Sjaak preached a Retreat in Grand Rapids, Michigan from 5th-12th October 2006. He accepted the invitation to be with St Mary's parish in Michigan for their 150th Anniversary weekend and the Retreat on the Millenium Goals that followed because of their 20 years of solidarity with the poor in Rio de Janeiro. They have supported many projects and kept close ties with the work of Brasili-Ja.

The weekend that he returned the Minister of Justice, Mr Hirsch Ballin, and some other Members of Parliament for the Christian Democrats spoke with a group of parishioners after Mass. The Minister said "Church and State are separate in The Netherlands but should not be isolated from each other".
